Spitfire to star at Croft Nostalgia weekend

22nd February 2012

An air display from one of the most famous, evocative and best-loved planes in history, a World War Two Spitfire, will be part of this year’s Croft Nostalgia weekend (4-5 August).

With its unmistakeable engine note the Spitfire, which for many symbolises the Allies’ triumph in WWII as well as one of British engineering’s greatest feats, will take to the skies above Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire on the Saturday (4 August). Significantly, Croft was first used as a bomber base during the war years before becoming a motor sports venue in the late Forties…

The Spitfire is one of many exciting additions – many more still to be announced – for what will be the third running of Nostalgia, a captivating two-day festival mixing a wartime theme as well as huge classic car displays with four decades of the finest historic motor racing (1940s-1970s) on the challenging Croft Circuit track just outside Darlington.

The non-stop weekend, which also invites the public to join enthusiasts and actors by dressing in period style, is unique in the North East. More importantly it means the region can enjoy the type of retro atmosphere generated by similar, longer-established events further south which have gone on to attract crowds of many tens of thousands.

This summer’s Nostalgia event (4-5 August) will be FREE all weekend for children aged under 16. Tickets for adults are priced just £10 Saturday and £12 Sunday if booked in advance from the croftcircuit.co.uk website or by calling the circuit direct on 01325 721815.

Mike Scorer of the Military Vehicle Trust, which sources the vehicles and  aircraft that make up Nostalgia’s incredible wartime display, commented: “We’re delighted to have secured the Spitfire – a truly magnificent machine as well as a significant piece of British history – for 2012’s Nostalgia weekend. This is one of only six original RAF Spitfires within the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight collection and the opportunity to see one complete with that wonderful noise from its Rolls-Royce Merlin engine being put through its paces is, we hope, something many people will turn out to experience.”

Croft Circuit Manager Tracey Morley added: “More than 60 years on the Spitfire, in fact perhaps more than ever, still has the ability to move so many people – it really is something very special from another era and it will surely be a big highlight of our Nostalgia festival which continues to go from strength to strength. The event really seems to have captured the public’s imagination and already we’ve begun taking orders for tickets from all over the UK which has to be great news for the region.”
