Newgarden perpares for the Hungaroring GP3
29th July 2010
From Hockenheim to the Hungaroring in just one short week, the GP3 Series descends upon
Budapest this weekend, for round six of the 2010 Championship, and Josef Newgarden will be
looking for some points.
Having started from pole position last weekend at Hockenheim, the 19 year-old American was
unable to convert his qualifying pace into a strong race result. Race one saw Newgarden taken out
on the last lap when a car hit the Carlin no.14 machine from behind, and in the second of the
weekend’s races Newgarden had a coming together with Manor Racing’s James Jakes.
Regardless, the Carlin driver has shown a huge amount of potential in this inaugural GP3 season,
and to his absolute credit has boldly managed the pressure of enduring a tough season. It has
been a steep learning curve in 2010 having made the jump up from UK Formula Ford, with
Newgarden never having driven on any of the European circuits prior to each of the Friday practice
sessions.
“I’m obviously disappointed with the outcome of the Hockenheim event, but we had good pace in
qualifying, and started from pole,” said Newgarden, “so there are definitely a lot of positives to take
away from the weekend.
“There’s little point in getting frustrated when you’re having a difficult season and the results aren’t
where you think they should be. We know we can be quick, and I’m looking forward to getting onto
the circuit and up to speed so we can chase down that strong result.”
Newgarden will be out on the Hungaroring track for the first time in Friday’s practice session, with
qualifying scheduled for the following morning at 08:45. Race one will get underway at 17:20 on
Saturday afternoon, with race two scheduled to start at 09:25 on Sunday morning (local times).
