Harvey leads Carrera Cup GB at half time

29th July 2010

With a record breaking nine wins from 10 races, Tim Harvey has taken a firm grip on the contest for the overall Porsche Carrera Cup GB title as the championship prepares to emerge from a seven-week mid-season recess.

Racing for Red Line Racing, the 2008 Carrera Cup champion will go into the second half of the season with a substantial 39-point lead over Michael Caine, but Harvey says that he's not about to coast to the title. He wants to win more races.

"It's been an exceptional start to the year," said Harvey. "Not just for me, but in the history of the Carrera Cup GB. No one has won nine out of 10 races and it's an almost perfect half season for me. I didn’t expect it to be as good as it has been, because it is always tough. There are always new competitors and people capable of winning races. The challenges are new each year, whether it is the car or other drivers to race against. I'm always looking to improve and you are never too old to learn new tricks."

Harvey is the most successful driver in the history of the championship, having won 33 races since the start of the Carrera Cup GB. He has scored a total of 97 podium finishes from 134 starts and needs only three more podiums over the next 10 races to hit another milestone.

However, Harvey knows that it could all go wrong for him in the space of one weekend. "Whenever you are doing well, motorsport is always about to bring you down a peg or two. So every race we've gone to, I've expected it to end and for someone to come out and thrash me, but it hasn’t happened yet."

He reckons that being at the front of the pack is the best place to be over the coming five race weekends. "Behind me, there are six or eight guys who are all very close and competitive and I can't run in that group conservatively. I could end up with a non-finish as a result of trying to be conservative. The safest place to be is at the front so I'm just going to keep going on the same basis as I have for the first half of the season; to approach every session and every race trying to be in front.

"I'm two races in front at the moment and I'd love not to have to go into that final race biting my fingernails. Every time we do it the finishing line, in terms of winning the championship, gets closer."

The Carrera Cup GB season resumes with rounds 11 and 12 at Snetterton over the weekend of 7/8 August
